More Dune film news from the proposed director Pierre Morel

Thanks to the success of “Taken,” Morel has an opportunity to direct his dream project, an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic “Dune” (1965), which touches on subjects ranging from politics to human emotions. It’s something he has dreamed about since his teen years.

“I’m such a fan of the book,” Morel said. “I read the first book (in the series) when I was 14 or 15, and I was sucked into that universe.

“When I was a teen, I didn't have the money to buy all six books, so I bought one and six months later bought the second one and so on. I was touched by the material because it’s more than just science fiction.

“It’s a psychological tale about evolution.”

David Lynch adapted a financially disastrous version of “Dune” in 1984. (The title arrives April 27 on Blu-ray Disc.) Morel has mixed feelings about it.

“I had two different reactions to his version,” he said. “As a ‘Dune’ book fan, I didn’t like the movie, because it was not what I expected it to be.

“Then, I saw it from another angle as a Lynch fan, and I love the movie that way, because it was very creative.”

And how does Morel feel about the new trend to make movies in 3-D thanks to the success of James Cameron’s “Avatar”?

“I’m like everyone else and went to see ‘Avatar’ with my kids,” said Morel, who has three young children. “We went twice to see it (due to the great 3-D visuals).

“I like the technology, but whatever technology we have, we need good stories to support it.”
